Winter is here…well still here and you may have noticed an increase in dry tresses for your little one’s curls. I never put too much effort into my daughter’s soft bouncy curls just sprayed with water and put a little moisturizing cream in it. I decided it was time to put forth more winter hair care when it comes to my daughter’s hair.
Now that we live in New York where the climate is much drier than Texas, I’ve noticed her hair starting to break and a lot more fizziness. I thought about how I take care of my natural hair and realized I should use a similar hair regime on my daughter, despite our difference in curl patterns.
Since the change in how I was taking care of her hair, I have noticed quite a bit of change in her curls.
5 Tips for healthy winter hair care
Co-wash instead of shampoo. I like to co-wash as opposed to using shampoo. Shampoos can be drying on the hair and since the hair is already dry from the dry climate do not add to it. Find a good moisturizing conditioner to use as a co-wash.
Deep Condition. I wash my daughter’s hair once a week and typically do a deep condition once every other week. Deep conditioners are good for promoting hair growth, increasing moisture and preventing damage and breakage.
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Moisture-rich products are essential for healthy curly hair. I add moisturizing curl cream to her hair on a daily basis from root to ends. It is important to keep the ends moisturized to avoid splitting.
Wear protective styles. My daughter loves to wear her hair down, but I noticed in the winter wearing it down caused her hair to appear dull and dry. And when you have curly hair, it tends to look more like a frizzy helmet. Who wants that?
Sleep with a satin cap or satin pillowcase. You should be using one of these two regardless of the time of year. Cotton pillowcases aid in pulling moisture from the hair and all the friction from rolling around at night, they can be very damaging to the hair causing breakage.
Some of my favorites products come from the SheaMoisture line. To battle the inevitable tangles we use SheaMoisture kids detangler which we have found to make coming through her hair much easier. For moisture, I use SheaMoisture Curl and Style Milk. I use this for both J’s and my hair and absolutely love it, it truly hydrates dry curls, and mine can get very dry. I like to complete any look with Creme of Nature Argan Oil Strength and Shine Leave-in. This oil-based leave in helps to maintain any fly-aways. Lastly, for a deep conditioner, I love Mielle Organics Babassu oil and mint deep conditioner.
